Trick or Treat? Tips from Scarr Insurance to Keep Your Halloween Sweet, not Scary!

Trick or Treat? Tips from Scarr Insurance to Keep Your Halloween Sweet, not Scary! It’s that time of the year again! October is our favorite month—not only is it Fall (the best season of all) but we also get to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters, go to haunted houses and ghostly costume parties. With all this excitement in the air, you’ll want to make sure you and your loved ones are protected and prepared for this year’s Halloween festivities. There’s nothing spookier than a Halloween celebration gone wrong.

If you are a parent, a neighbor handing out candy, or a party host this year, we recommend that you keep the following tips in mind:

Neighbors

You have a sweet task at hand. However, it will become bitter if one of the kids at your door gets hurt. Did you know that you are completely responsible for someone else’s injury if it happens on your property? If you have a liability policy on your homeowner’s insurance plan, then you’ll be covered for any type of incident that might happen anywhere around your home.

To avoid any complications, take care of the following before the night of Halloween:

• Loose electrical cords or decoration garlands.

• Tripping hazards on your lawn.

• Any clutter on your entranceway.

If your family members are driving back home on the night of Halloween, please advise them to be careful while driving through the neighborhood. After all, Halloween night is known as the most dangerous for pedestrians.

Parents

Make a plan! Prepare a trick-or-treating route; include the homes of nearby neighbors only. Trick-or-treating at the local mall might also be a good alternative for you and your kids—there are no cars, and for the most part the shops give out great treats for the kids.

If you are keeping it traditional, please remember to:

• Tell your kids to stop at each light or driveway to check for cars.

• Never cross the street mid-block or between parked cars.

• Take a flashlight with fresh batteries to help them see and be seen.

Check for costumes safety! Opt for garments that don’t obstruct vision or movement. Make sure to adjust the length of your kid’s costume to avoid tripping, and add reflective material or tape to it to keep them visible to other pedestrians and cars.

Party Host

When it comes to injuries around your property, liability coverage under your homeowner’s policy may be enough. However, once your guests step inside of your home, we are talking about a whole different story. Your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover accidents inside your home if and only if you have a separate policy for that instance.

Got questions about your current homeowner’s insurance policy? We have many offices throughout South Florida, including Tampa and Ft. Lauderdale. Come visit us; we’ll be glad to help you make this year’s Halloween celebration the greatest (and safest) you’ve ever had.
